A geographic information system (or GIS) is a computer-based tool or system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographical data.

Cartography is the art, technique, science or practice of drawing maps or charts. It is also the study of maps. Maps make our lives infinitely easier. It is not easy to make a map, however. There are countless measurements to be made, lines to be drawn, and all of it must be done with painstaking accuracy. It is no wonder the practice of mapmaking is a complex one. No. It is the software serving the purpose of Cartography. The end product is maps in whichever Cartographic projection you want or need.
