What does it mean when a map is drawn to scale?

Who owns (as a country) the Azores Islands?

When a map is drawn to scale it means that it is not drawn the same distance as if it were a real thing like from NY to NC they wouldn't draw it as the same distance they would draw it a certain amount of inches apart and they give you a scale for the distance for example the scale might be for every 2 inches is 3,000 miles in the actual distance

The distance from one place to another may be 1,000 km (or miles if you're in the U.S.) but obviously you cannot handle a map like that! So, a scale is used to represent actual distance. And the more land area on the map the greater the scale difference. If you are looking at a map of a city the scale may be 1:2 meaning 1 inch equals 2 miles. However, looking at a map of North America the scale may be 1:500.



The Azores are owned by Portugal.
