To all Westerners, out of interest, if someone says 'The Philippines', what immediately springs to mind?

I am preparing a proposal for a documentary and am curious to know that this part of SE Asia conjours up in the minds of lay Europeans and/or Westerners.

The first thing that comes to mind is Imelda Marcos... and all of those shoes. Next would be General Douglas MacArthur. Also the Spanish-American War. And finally it has been reported that during the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, MO, that the Phillipine Village was set up to represent daily life as it was in the Phillipines during that time... and they would hunt, and eat dogs. I'm sorry that's the best I can do, but good luck....

" That's where I was born and until the year 2000, I was a citizen of that country"... I've lived in the United States since I was six months old, and haven't been back to the Philippines for a visit, yet. My mother is also from the Philippines. My dad was stationed at Clark Air Base when he met my mom... Mom just went back for her first visit in nearly 21 years back in June to celebrate her parent's 50th wedding anniversary!

I think of the Bataan Death March in which the Japanese killed thousands of Americans and Filipinos, the Philipino Insurrection of the early 1900s, Dewey's destruction of the Spanish fleet in 1898. Oh and of Lapu Lapu - I believe he was responsible for the death of Ferdinand Magellan.

as far as i understand, maximum females like Darcy, over Wickham ultimately. Wickham and Darcy are the two opposites. Wickham has a cunning tongue, candy speaking and human beings likes him at contemporary. yet on the different hand, Darcy keeps to himself, yet speaks to the factor, which in maximum situations interior the radical, hurts the ppl. My ultimate fictional character of classic is Heathcliff of Wuthering heights by utilising Emily Bronte! tournament that :P

The first thing I honestly tink about is my adopted filipino cousins.
Second--a land lost between cultures. Are they Asian? American? Islander? Spanish? Everything and nothing?
