support who you want to. My self i want to buy things that are made or grown close and local. If i know one company hires or uses more temp or illegals i will spend a few extra to get from someone different. Like stopping at the convience store that is ran by an americian than some other nationality. You can not make everything better so buy americian and keep jobs here or where ever you are at.

The idea of fair trade is that you know that the people who produced your food (fruit/coffee/etc..) were paid a fair wage and that their environment is being managed in a sustainable way so that they can continue to harvest products.

Would you still want those bananas if they were picked buy children working 12 hours a day and paid 50 cents?

Would you really want to buy coffee from a company that clear-cut a rainforest for a single harvest, then moved on to a new area?

Yes. I'm not really sure how much difference it makes but if I am going to buy coffee, chocolate, flowers and there is a choice I buy the fair trade stuff. As a textile artist I'd like to buy African fabrics knowing that the money would go mostly to the producer but haven't found any fair trade fabric yet.

Hello Hayoung

There are 2 reasons why people should buy fairtrade, the latter being of more importance.

People should buy fairtrade because:

- Some of the money that gets generated from selling the goods go back into community projects for example: coffee beans that get made in africa and sold in uk- some of the profits go back to africa to support families.

- It avoids exploitation in many different ways for example in some countries like China, companies employ children to work, because they are cheap labour which means they can sell their product cheaper. Fairtrade might thus be a little more expensive but you know you havent got the product through the exploitation of children/poor people.

Hope it makes sense and convinces you to buy Fairtrade where possible.

Ordinarily, farmers and land owners in third world countries were paid a pittance for their produce and land. The supermarkets would buy this and then stick a £1-2.00 premium on it and claim they had to pay their suppliers.

Fair trade means they are paid slightly less of a pittance but you are charged an extortionate amount because your supermarket still wants it's pound of flesh.

Some do run good schemes though for the families of workers, helping to fund schools, houses, clean water and living conditions, to be fair!

Well i think the fact that it helps farmers to get a better price for their product is great. + it enables them to employ more people on their farms and statistically will eventually show that the notion of treating the worlds farmers fairly is becoming ever more popular as an ideal in the food trade. these country's are ,in the main, third world because greedy traders keep them that way in order to pay less and maximise profits. in a way its gently helping mankind to get rid of its own parasites.

because the money goes to better causes to help the people who make the fair trade chocolate have better homes and good working conditions...:)

Please buy fairtrade!

Every Time you buy Fairtrade, just think to yourself: "Go Me, I made someone really happy"

Fairtrade can prevent poverty, change lives and give someone much worse off than yourself a better lease of life.
