The story “the bet” by anton chekhov, is a fictional story about a bet between two men. In an argumant over capital punishment. They make a silly bet that leaves bothe men without anything. This story was good because it had a surprise ending, interesting charaters, and great figurative language.

The surprise ending comes first. The ending of this story was a real shocker. It was a shock because the beginning was thought to be so predictable. just as the reader thinks hes figured out the end, the middle turns everything around and shocks the reader. As the old banker comes to his decision of killing the prisoner and is about to end his life swiftly without regret , he stumbles upon to the letter and decides to read what the crippled man's soon to be last words were . he reads of how the man saw the brilliance of things that no other has . how the books that were all he had made him feel emotions that were impossible for others to feel , and he reads how he know longer wishes to take part with others and understand them . the banker enters depression realizing this and leaves and in the latter hides the evidence .



this story uses many similes and other word devices to create the picture of brilliance that it is . one of the best used things in the story is the alliteration such as " playing of the pipes of pan " and it's beauty resonates even more .
