A volcano is made by a solid that turns into a liquid and has the opportunity to rise through some kind of solid. It helps realism if it includes something like gas, because that is also part of a volcanic eruption.
There are several great ideas here:http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/volc_models/explosive.html

Use Ammonium Dichromate. It burns and produces ash. You can get it at a science or chemistry supply business. The staff usually knows what it is when you ask.
