Well, looks like... nobody knows. This is what Wikipedia says about its etymology:

"Guinea: of unknown origin; the English form comes via Portuguese Guiné from a (presumed) indigenous African name. Or possibly from the Berber meaning "land of the blacks" ".

On a French site:

http://www.cosmovisions.com/ChronoAfrique05.htm

Basically says that the name was imposed by Europeans, but is from African origine.

Two theories:

- it would come from the names "Ginyia" or "Gineua", Arabic name for "Jenné" or "Djenné", commercial centers of black African kingdoms (and Arabs were in touch with Portuguese).

- it would come from the Berbere meaning "bush" (same origin for Ghana).

Hope it helps!
